Bosun Dinghy -
Class Overview
The Bosun Dinghy is the basic dinghy
trainer for both the Army and the Royal Navy. A strong sturdy boat
it has a reputation for being well behaved in a sea, and kind to
those learning to sail. A number of recent modifications have made
the boat easier to handle including the introduction of the vertical
rudder, self bailers and spreaders
It has proved itself as a good
team racing boat. Competitors are naturally limited by the amount
of energy that can be transferred to the boat, that said it both
rolls and tacks extremely well.
The services are now moving onto
the advanced sailing dinghies. This has meant there are a good number
of Bosuns, regularly reaching the general civilian market place.
They can be obtained through Sea Scout organisations or Ex-Military
Disposal Auctions.
Current ownership of the boats
in the Nationals showed a good proportion of boats were sailed by
both private owners.
The recent Nationals proved that
boats of over 30 years old are still competitive, and the Class
in conjunction with the MOD is progressively introducing modifications
to ensure that the boat is competitive and easy to use as other
boats of a similar performance.
The Bosun Class Association was
managed for many years by the Royal Navy under the control of Commander
Richard Jenkins, OBE. Richard assisted by the three services, however
the association has now fallen into decline and would welcome some
keen civilain or military personnel who would be willing to revitalise
the association and get it back to its previously strong glory days
